As the 2026 midterm U.S. elections approach, a great deal of uncertainty remains about the rules and regulations governing how Americans vote. President Donald Trump has been pushing plans to change the voting system through executive actions and legislative efforts, including requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, placing restrictions on the use of mail ballots, mandating photo ID for federal elections, enforcing voter roll purges and removing members of the Election Assistance Commission. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is threatening to prosecute top election officials across the country if ballots cast by non citizens are counted in upcoming elections.
