Platform for Action Part F: Women in the Economy

Society for International Development, Washington Chapter

Date & Time

Tuesday, Sep 29, 2015
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the UN World Conference on Women and Platform for Action in Beijing and its 12 Points of Concern, the Society for International Development’s Gender and Inclusive Development Workgroup (SID-GID) – Washington, DC Chapter is planning 12 events in 2015, with each month aligning to a point of concern from the Platform for Action.

On September 29, the SID GID Beijing +20 discussion series continues with a discussion on Women in the Economy, co-hosted by the Development Finance Workgroup and Nathan Associates Inc. The panel will share experiences on the progress made since 1995 towards the strategic objectives in the Beijing Platform, offer thoughts on the context in 2015 and current emerging issues, and provide their perspective on how governments, the private sector and civil society can continue to advance women’s economic empowerment. The discussion will highlight the following key issues:

  1. Women’s economic rights and independence, including access to employment, appropriate working conditions and control over economic resources;
  2. Women’s equal access to resources, employment, markets and trade;
  3. Business services, training and access to markets, information and technology, particularly to low-income women;
  4. Women’s economic capacity and commercial networks;
  5. Occupational segregation and all forms of employment discrimination; and
  6. Harmonization of work and family responsibilities for women and men.

The organizers encourage attendees to read Part F of the Platform for Action in advance of the event and come prepared to engage each other and the panelists in reflecting upon progress since 1995 and in the future.

Lunch will be served from 12:15pm.
