International Talk: Israel after the elections
Between war, judicial reform and the threat to democracy
On October 27th, Israel will elect a new parliament. The election is taking place shortly after the third anniversary of October 7th and the wars that followed, with a Prime Minister on trial, a systematic attack on independent institutions, and a coalition that has done everything in its power right up to the last moment to undermine the conditions for free and fair elections.
How are the political camps positioning themselves? What do the course of the elections and the result mean for Israeli democracy? And what impact will the result have on the prospects of an end to the occupation of the Palestinian territories? Two days after the election, we invite you to an International Talk.
Dr Shaked Spier, Head of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s office in Israel, will provide an initial overview of the events on election day and the result, analyse the political constellations and discuss what can be expected from a new government – and what cannot. (Pre-election analysis by Shaked Spier)
This will be followed by a discussion with Lea Reisner, Member of the German Bundestag, on the implications of this election for German policy towards Israel and the Left Party’s foreign policy work. The discussion will be moderated by Gil Shohat, West Asia senior advisor at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.
The talk will be held in German with simultaneous interpretation into English.
The event will take place online as a Zoom webinar. Please register (see above); the access details will be sent by email the day before the event.
